Tea, Cake & Art is a creative social group for older people, particularly those living alone, who would like to meet and spend time with others.

Join us for a cuppa, a chat and a little art on Tuesday afternoons (2pm - 4pm) in The Exchange Cafe.

When you arrive, speak to one of our volunteers at the front desk and they will direct you to the café.

We hope that by coming you will:

  • Meet new people and make new friends.
  • Be inspired by the exhibitions.
  • Enjoy exploring different themes and ideas with others, through talking and making.
  • Learn about art and artists and how they make their work.
  • Be supported to try out new creative activities.

We will have tours of the exhibitions and relaxed conversations about their themes over tea and cake. These themes will then feed into the activities we do.

Activities could include drawing, photography, print-making, weaving, and making as well as story-telling, poetry and even singing! The idea is that over time the group decides what they would like to do and suggests activities.

Do I need any previous experience of art?

You do not need any previous experience of art – either making it or looking at it! You don’t even have to have been to The Exchange before, in fact, we would love to welcome new visitors to the gallery.

All activities will be suitable for complete beginners.

Who will be leading the sessions?

The sessions will be informally led by Megan Beck who is the gallery's Community Engagement Programmer. Megan has taught a range of art and design classes in Adult and Community Education and has run a variety of arts projects in different places.

Sometimes, other artists and makers will visit the group to talk about their work and lead some activities. The sessions will also be supported by one of our fantastic volunteers.

FREE, all welcome.
