Fassbinder was fascinated by strong, smart women using their wiles to navigate a man’s world; Hawks’ gorgeous musical about two showgirls sailing for Paris while checking out suitably moneyed males fits the bill perfectly. Monroe and Russell are terrific, the musical numbers are simultaneously sumptuous and ironic, and the colour and costumes are ravishing.
