Printmaking with Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust, July-September 2023

Posted: 1st October 2023

This project was devised to create a permanent legacy installation for the Islington Memory Service clinic space, with artworks created by local people with dementia, their carers and companions, and NHS staff. The project was participant led from the onset, with focus groups selecting local landmarks to ground visitors in the identity of their community. Local print artist Melissa Fry from Engage Here, alongside Arts for Dementia staff, led participants through two-hour print workshops across three weeks to create the collection. The installation features a vibrant display of screen-prints, providing an inspiring and welcoming environment for those attending dementia assessments.

We created a catalogue to stay in the memory clinic so people can read about the artworks, and gave a copy to all the participants. One of the stories was about Eric:

Eric was in the Navy and did ten tours to Australia.  He chose the tunnel as his landmark as the water of the canal reminded him of memories of his youth.  “It’s nice to be reminded of the past, but also get out and learn a new skill.”
