Rag Weaving with Leanne McLaughlin
for participants
for carers

As part of our Creative Aging programme, Void is working with artist Leanne McLaughlin on a series of art packs. These art packs are aimed at our older citizens in Derry and Strabane who may be isolating / restricting their movements due to Covid-19.
For the first activity, Leanne has devised a rag weaving workshop, inspired by Derry’s textile industry. Derry has been connected to the textile industry throughout history. The city at one point housed 44 factories, all of which created much needed employment for families throughout the city. Workers learned a variety of skills including an excellent attention to detail and an eye for colour, texture and fabric. This simple, a rag weaving activity will allow you to create your own textile placemat using materials sourced from factories that were operational in Derry.
Void will provide a cardboard loom, textiles and thread, along with instructions. We have a limited number of packs available so get in contact with Maeve Butler on engage@derryvoid.com to reserve your pack. Packs will be available from the 16 March.
