A4D workshop programme at the Science Museum Medicine Galleries

In January and February 2020, Arts 4 Dementia and the Science Museum were delighted to offer a 4-week programme of combined science and arts from the newly opened Medicine: The Wellcome Galleries.

Participants enjoyed a private view of this breath-taking presentation of the history of medical science. The workshops, led by experts from the Museum including a member of the curatorial team, each week told the facinating stories behind the exhibits from the Wellcome Collection and then drew out creative skills in arts and crafts that participants may have never realised you had.

Each session focused on a different theme and a different section of the Medicine Galleries, highlighting some of the fascinating objects and exploring the relationship between art and science. Participants experimented with different creative practices, inspired by the marvellous stories showcased in the galleries.

Following the talks and the creative work, participants were able to reflect and socialise with the Museaum team, with tea, coffee and refreshments.

A4D workshops are aimed at those living with early-stage dementia, who are invited to attend with a companion – whether friend, family member or carer. No experience is required.

They are free of charge and all materials are provided.

A further series is planned for September/October 2020.  For further information, contact Ellen Wilson, A4D Charity Administrator.
